«"After the bridge that goes down to Ortiga, where once there was a quay, with its worst sheep Rita was grazing"»
A new district of Milan, which thanks to its splendid murals has been named a museum district. This and much more is the Ortica District of Milan. We will set off on a guided tour, diving into the past of this district that has thousands of stories to tell.
Born as an agricultural village near the Lambro River, it was catapulted into the new century thanks to the construction of the railway in the second half of the nineteenth century. The important railway station ended up surrounding the neighborhood, giving it an unprecedented isolation from the rest of the city, which allowed a different evolution.
After the Second World War, a new change: Ortica, with the Innocenti production plants, became a true industrial hub, while remaining isolated from the rest of the city and home to Milan's urban proletariat.
This isolation ensured that Ortica preserved its traditions and even today, the sense of community of its inhabitants is very strong.
The fascinating murals that you will find along the route are from 2015, thanks to the ORME (Ortica Memoria) project. The collaboration between associations and non-profits in the neighborhood with the artists' collective OrticaNoodles and the patronage of the Municipality of Milan has made it possible to cover the walls of the Ortica buildings with murals that tell the story of the neighborhood and the city during the twentieth century.
A dive into the past of this fascinating museum neighborhood of Milan, spectator and custodian of the great changes that have crossed Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries.
